Lee Hall Mansion is the only large antebellum plantation house remaining on the lower Virginia Peninsula. Now an historic house museum documenting the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, Lee Hall Mansion's decorated rooms and the 1862 Peninsula Campaign Gallery are open to the public. Special programs and lectures are offered throughout the year interpreting how the Civil War forever changed the fabric of American society.

Visitors to the living museum encounter more habitats, wildlife and plant species than would be encountered in a lifetime of outdoor adventures in Virginia. The exhibits showcase all of the state’s regions from the upland coves of the Appalachian Mountains to the salty offshore waters of the Atlantic Ocean and feature more than 245 different animal species.

The museum was established in 1923 by American Legion Post #25 (The Braxton/Perkins Post) as the American Legion Memorial Museum. Over the past 75 years, the museum has acquired over 60,000 artifacts. The size of the collection is a blessing; however, due to limited display space, only 8-10% of the museum's collection can be displayed at any given time.

In the spring of 2007, this landmark was given to Christopher Newport University by the Yoder family and the Yoder Preservation Trust, Inc. The official donation was presented to CNU's President Paul Trible, marking the third chapter for the barn that housed dairy cows from 1935 to 1969, later a community theatre and now it is home to Tidewater Regional Repertory Theatre.
